The demise of one of the gigs I recently attended and was looking forward to attending more often has got me thinking. It's in a pedestrian area and yet most go to the place across from it which also has karaoke same night yet to me seems the inferior venue. I blame the lack of promotion of the gig at the venue I prefer. The competing venue has its karaoke at ground floor and passersby will hear the music no problem whereas the preferred venue's karaoke is up a tiny, well hidden staircase and unless you knew there even was a staircase, you'd assume you had explored the whole venue downstairs when you enter from the side doors, finding just a regular pub and poker machine area. *yawns* A staff member was helpful in directing me to the karaoke but I had knowledge in advance otherwise I'd have just passed it by as a pedestrian given that its sound, impressive as it is, weirdly does not really travel outside and I saw no signs advertising its presence.
So operators. What kind of advertising at venues has proven useful to karaoke for you?
I know word of mouth is a big factor and the gig list here helps but I mean AT the venues themselves what kind of support has karaoke gotten and which is the most effective form of advertising you have been provided (if any)?
As a punter, I've found flyers posted around the venue useless as there are multiple flyers advertising everything from bands to alcohol related promotions. What I have always noticed are the big chalkboards out the front of a venue, whether stuck to the outer wall or free standing on the pavement, simply saying 'KARAOKE' along with the relevant abbreviated night of the week and when applicable, 'COMPETITION' with the amount of prize money shown.
Punters, how do you find out about the karaoke gigs you either go to usually or have an interest in going to 'one of these days?'
