Hey Johnny Burrows,
I have been in the entertainment industry for about 20 years but don't sing karaoke. However, I have been watching these forums for about 6 months and have often laughed at your posts on here and wondered what this coat was that you wear and how it must attract the ladies or EC as you call them. And your constant talk on here about the ladies made me think you must be a bit of a model looking guy or something. And when Ray wrote about you and challenged you about your singing ability and to go and do something, and you challenged him back, it was also very amusing. So being a Manly local I thought I would pop in to the Brighton Hotel with a few of my girlfriends and check you out and make up my own mind.
With what you said about the judging and stuff earlier I also have to agree. I saw the poster up on the wall and it did say a trip for 2 for a weekend to Hamilton Island. Just did a quick search and calculation of costs for such a trip adn flights and accommodation would put you up for $2500 at least from Sydney. So the fact the hotel did that is very poor form and could very well be considered false advertising to change it on the night to a $1000 travel voucher.
The judges being from the audience was a joke. The person that won had 2 of the judges from her friends and also spent her time, and her friends did as well, coaxing 2 of the 'pirate' judges to vote for them as well. Funnily the 2 pirate judges didn't spend any time watching most of the contestants at all. They were there in the back at a buck's party. I was sitting right next to them so saw the tricks they pulled. The girl that came second had 2 friends as judges (1 of them gave her a high five as she came up to the stage to sing) and 1 other girl contestant had a friend as a judge. That would seem mighty unfair to the other contestants that it would seem that 7 of the 8 judges were friends or coaxed by 3 of the contestants (2 of which came 1st and 2nd). In my opinion did they deserve their placings? The first girl definitely not!! She was vocally pretty good, though had a number of glitches and did not actually perform really during her songs to what I have seen done in the entertainment industry for those songs. The girl that came 2nd, perhaps the best female vocals of the night but again nothing too exciting or engaging about her performance. I personally thought that the guy that came 3rd who did the Robbie Williams number and sang James Blunt sung both songs excellently and wowed the crowd with the getup in the Robbie number and had everyone almost shocked! But amused and entertained amazingly. I saw a number of people go to him afterwards and shake his hand and then after the judging people saying he should have won. I would probably agree with that.
I think that the host could have had a better way of picking the judges then. Perhaps he could have let the crowd pick the top four and then let the host put the order given that he should have some singing / performance understandnig credibility?? I think it is an easy out to blame it on the audience. He decided to make the the judges so it goes back to him. The venue seemed to be scrounging as much as they could. I see on here though a judges bench with people wanting to judge for free and Manly have heaps of celebrities around who for a few free drinks could have judged!
As for Johnny Burrows, the man of my interest for his singing and 'Eye Candy pick up prowess' I think I was a bit letdown. Your moves were great during the first song (how you get to do the splits baffles me) and you sing it kinda like Elvis which is great but the voice was a bit shaky in parts. I did recognise the second song but it is not really one of my faves and again is kinda Elvisish (is that what you are trying to be perhaps?). It is a bit of a boring song though. And you seemed to just want to try and put the same dance moves as the first song into it to inspire the '2 girls' who cheered for you when you got up to sing the second song. But realistically these girls were enthusiastic for everyone, and were also dancing with anyone that got up to dance. They semed to be either drunk or of no shame.
As far as being marketable which is what Ray was going on about, I asked for my 3 girlfriends opinions and they also agreed with my opinion and Ray's that you would have difficulty finding a market based on last night's performance and your natural look. There are many Elvis impersonators out there and to be blunt, they are much better looking naturally. Sorry to burst your bubble! Girl's opinions though! Perhaps your market could be of older style songs as your song suits them but with that would be an older market as well.
And of course we followed your running around after the EC's last night with much amusement. You are like a dog on heat hhehehehe. You seemed to want to follow the one in the denim skirt with the legs all over the place. Not sure if you saw her kiss the guy outside the toilets near where we were sitting, so not sure if you had a chance there. My friends thought and I agreed that she was just a bit out of your league!
But good luck with Korean lass. I have to agree though with Ray and say that I was a bit letdown with my expectations on what you could provide. I am not a A and R person as you claimed that Ray may be but I have spent 20 years in the entertainment industry and I brought along some females to check out your 'attributes' but we all agreed. In Ray's corner for this one. Some may say that Mick Jagger and Steve Tyler are examples that the non-marketable person can make it but they had incredible voices and their marketability extended through their bands, and by your age they had already made it as well.
Good luck with it though but based on your performance last night I would have had you 4th or 5th perhaps.
I noted also that you challenged Ray to see what he is like as a performer and you may ask the same of me. However, I agree with Ray that you have upped yourself on the site (which I have enjoyed) and therefore open yourself up to be criticised or judged. Ray has not done that and neither am or will I. Keep up the posts though cos they are amusing, but I think you need a touch of reality after last night seeing you for myself.Hey Johnny Burrows,
