From the Where2sing.com forum:

It must be some terrible karaoke that the author of today's Karaoke's #1 feature article has been attending.
How karaoke can be broad brushed as 'silly' and somehow beneath a singer is beyond me. Do you think military guys don't like a game of Paintball now and then? Or that Firemen don't use a garden hose cos it's too much of a kid's toy? Do you no longer have birthday parties with cake and presents because those are just for children? Get your hand off it!! If you've got talent, then share it, don't hide it. If you have the gift of making people feel good just by listening to you, why would you want to save it for a gig that better suits your own desires? That seems the mindset of a selfish prima donna rather than a true performer to me. If you 'love' to perform, then DO SO. You may just raise the bar for other singers at that venue and wind up enjoying your nights out more because the gig's reputation for good singers (thanks to you) will attract other good singers eager to show off to or at least check out their peers.
Meanwhile, again, remember karaoke IS for fun. It's for everyone to get up and be a star for a few minutes at a time. All that is left then is to tweak its appeal in terms of sound, song choice, quality of hosting, singer rotation and value for money for a night's entertainment. Making friends and networking is a bonus.
So, get up on stage next time you are there and at risk of sounding incredibly ocker for a change, 'Have a go!'
