From the Where2sing.com forum:

Hi tom....., i have found in the past it is often a challenge to take someone who has not been to karaoke before...and as they usually are too afraid to sing...to help them to enjoy the night, is also the challenge. As I understand the concept pretty well due to experience, I appreciate for the newcomer, the often hidden underlying manners and rules can be misunderstood. A number of hosts have been terrific in helping to overcome this even during my own initiation. I guess this is part of the reason I get a special buzz when I see someone new getting up. In reference to the repetition, it is a good point and hope all seasoned singers take note, I always admire those regulars who consistently try new songs, or at least 20, at their regular haunts.

Last week a couple of 'new to karajoke, friends did come along, from the beginning I said it gets better, I explained a few details of how it runs...introduced them to a few regulars....encouraged them to sing, with some help from Ray and others, however they were content to dance and watch...and chat with both listeners and singers alike. One said they had the time of their life...the other sms'd he was glad to have met such wonderful people.

JohnnyB...hey man!!! that is legendary...so many venues...that is keen...if I was a host I would consult u
