From the Where2sing.com forum:

Johnny, I was thinking of skill-building more as part of special events/promotional gigs rather than as part of regular use at gigs.

A note on noise: Last night at Chats we worked out some of the big issues:

1. A KJ is disadvantaged compared to a band mixer. The KJ gets sound tracks & vocalists that are at all sorts of volume levels, so has to constantly adjust. A band can set drum kit, instruments, & vocals then make minor adjustments.
2. Certain types of music, particularly 'thrash' guitar (fuzz tones) are essentially continuous white noise -ie- covering the whole pitch spectrum and with no rhythym breaks. So a person doing one of those tunes completely wipes out all conversation in the room even though the vocalist is singing no louder than another. So if those make up a big proportion of the evening there will be a noise escalation as everyone screams louder to talk over it and the muso's raise level to go over the background chatter - a vicious circle.

So, I've never thought that the life of a KJ was easy. But the purpose of the forum is to get feedback between punters, KJs, & others.
