Tom your spot on regarding a KJ’s difficulties and the constant adjustment of sound unlike a Band.
Nearly all manufactures of discs have various and notable sound level differences.
One of the biggest is switching from VCD to CDG and if you throw in some SCDG’s tracks then you’re constantly changing and adjusting the sound to suit.
Now on top of this you get different volumes with every singer unlike setting up for one band and one singer.
You have those that hold the microphone so far away from them that it’s a KJ’s nightmare to get enough volume and there are those that nearly swallow the Mic and of course again it requires constant adjustment.
There are also those that start of rather softly and as their confidence builds so to does their volume, or in some instances the reverse applies when you get someone that can’t remember how it goes or they just loose it half way through.
Now if you add in a Guitar and the list goes on.
One other aspect you touched on is crowd noise and this also requires constant attention as it may be relatively quite to start with, then building to a larger mass noise in the middle and the noise may even escalate as the drinks start to take affect.
Of course that is if you only have one Mic and one singer.
Quite a few KJ’s also use several mics for group singers and this also has to have constant monitoring.
So your comments about “I've never thought that the life of a KJ was easy” ring true but hey that’s Karaoke and you really should love what you do,……………..and I do love it.
Maybe there’s an avenue for Tafe to introduce a Karaoke Skill building course/s for not only Karaoke Skill building but the technical side of being a KJ.
Kind Regards
Kev
