Hey James.T.Orr...
I swear every time I type your name I hear the Star Trek introduction (cos of a certain captain of the Enterprise who was also a 'James T.' with a single syllable surname):-

'Where2sing.... The final frontier.... These are the voyages of the pastime 'Karaoke'.... Our continuing mission: To explore strange new gigs; To seek out new hosts and new sound quality; To boldly sing what no one has sung before!'

I understand the death of many a karaoke gig is financially related. Such is the way of things. I hope the gig listings INCREASE and soon. There are lots of venues in need of entertainment and karaoke needs the reputation boost.
I also appreciated the little rib about what is NOT to blame - was tempted to put something to that effect myself before so it was nice to see someone else giving it some. Hehehe).

Here's a suggestion for the hosts...
Since I first started singing karaoke some 14 and a half years ago, I've seen video camera set ups at a few karaokes where the singer is actually projected onto an audience screen. I really liked that. It seems to make karaoke more of a show to be enjoyed by the whole audience and gives the braver folk more of a desire to grace that stage because why do we all sing at karaoke if not for a taste of the limelight enjoyed by others? (Those others we happen to see on television and in magazines, that is). To have our own faces gracing a telly is kinda tempting, I am sure. Plus, it's safe cos it's only within the venue. So, we get to be famous in our own little microcosm and I think for most karaoke singers, that is enough.
So to the camera-less hosts, I say, if you have an audience screen, please consider utilising a camera set up. Maybe hire a camera just to give it a try and see what the response is first before committing to buying yet another expensive piece of equipment to add to the rig and worry about the welfare of. It may just increase your numbers, keeping the bar takings high and the venue staff happy to keep your gig there.

Thoughts anyone?
