From the Where2sing.com forum:

AUSTRALIA HAS A GREAT KARAOKE SCENE.I reported previously on my visit to Asia last year and only a few hours ago I flew back from Bali where karaoke as we know it doesn't exist-just grab the mic from the band and off you go-no screen just pages of words but if you're like me don't forget your reading glasses....what a great test of songs that you actually know the words of.

Julz....if its you that we have met through our mutual friend Jeanette(ie Greg and Sue fro Newcastle) Hi again and enjoy Vegas and Hawaii-been to both but unfortunately weren't into the karaoke scene then so can't help you out but if it's like Asia you need to be a private detective to find the right venues.

Back to my point...here we have got it mostly fair, good, very good and better.

Tom.....I don't have much to say on this site but a couple of months ago I said that their is no text book written for karaoke hosting. It is dependant on the personality, skill and judgement of the host, the type and mood of the venue and the night-try hosting on a full moon and also the patrons, number, type and quality of singers and good point by some that most people are in the business part time.I am fortunate to be able to be able to operate full time and to maintain a sustainable karaoke business is alot of hard work-albeit more fun than any small business that I know of.Also Tom the host is not just mixing sound he is running a busy show with responsibilities to the singers, the patrons, the publican and to the show. Many bands have the luxury of having someone mix in front of the sound not in line with or behind it and with not the other hosting responsibilities so I believe you won't find the perfect scenario -some fair some good some very good and some better.....and the same with the singers. The harder the host works on all aspects of the show the better the combination of good and bad are blended but not eliminated from a fun night.

So Johnny B and others I don't think there is much going wrong with karaoke here but I do think it is alot up to the hosts to make sure that they keep working hard at to keep the act up and in combination with the singers make sure that the other patrons are entertained on the night.Mind you I have yet to see a show in Newcastle that has survived where most of the singers don't get 2 - 3 songs per night.

Tom.....Also the volume depends on the song, the audience and the mood.....again no perfect scenario to please everyone.
