From the Where2sing.com forum:

My favourite sound system was at the Concourse, at Wynyard. They pumped the sound over the house PA so that it could be easily & uniformly heard from all points in the room at low volume. Of course, that is rarely possible - but you asked. Why was it great? Because you could sing soft, low notes or hard to hit notes and you knew everyone could hear you so you could concentrate on the song, not the mic technique. Karaoke Heaven. With a speaker-beside-you system it's hard to tell if you're deafening them or what. Half the time my wife says she could barely hear me so it's a toss up. I realize the problems of hosting. But if anyone wonders why we don't sit for 3 hours listening to get our 2 songs in it shouldn't be hard to work out. We paid to hear Billy Joel & Elton John together. Their whole show didn't go as long as some karaoke nights. And we wouldn't go to their concert week in week out even if it were free & next door. Very few entertainment events go for hours. Only Wagner opera fans like to sit passively silent for hours.
As to volume, I'm sure there's an optimal level. People come to socialize and need some breaks in the sound in order to talk. After all, many a karaoke conversation starts with 'What are you gonna sing?' or 'Found any good new ones?'. If it's too loud you can barely manage even that level of conversation.
