From the Where2sing.com forum:

I think you guys have all lost the plot re noise. A large stadium makes a lot of total wattage but it doesn't 'pollute' because it only goes to the crowd (we'll ignore power consumption issues). Nor does it hurt the ears as it's set to fill the stadium just like Carols by Candlelight. What I'm talking about is overpowering a room. You only have to compare Chats Wed & Friday, using same gear. On Wed there are plenty of escapes from the direct sound - a side room or moving away from the speaker, so no issue. On Friday, the layout fairly covers the room so it's completely up to the KJ to set overall sound level. This will change with the number of people talking, absorbtion of sound by their clothes, song styles ..etc. Even when set correctly, and with constant monitoring, an individual singer or song can disrupt the whole thing and pierce the ears, hence constant vigilance is required.
The point is if your particular crowds like deafening music, that's none of my business. I'm only warning that we have many generations coming up for deaf old age thanks to their loud hobbies, of which karaoke is but one. In my grandad's generation the deafness was from factory din. Now a lot of it is self-inflicted. I can protect myself. We use earplugs. But I still think it worth setting sound levels so people have the option of talking.
