From the Where2sing.com forum:

Karaoke is recorded music. The most we can ever sound like is a recording. It bears no comparison to live music. Indeed, 'live' is no longer live since it all comes through speakers. Even the days of bashing the Marshall Amp valves passed in favour of digital stomp boxes. So who are we fooling except ourselves? We can turn the sound to zero or full, just like a hi-fi, with one slider. The art comes in setting the mix. The issue after that is what Rob describes as walking around the room to test. When I sing, I try to err on the side of too quiet. If people like my tune, they'll listen closer. If they don't, my bashing their ears won't convert them. The same logic could apply to KJs. If they turn the sound down a bit and people are still buying drinks, talking, and queuing for songs, what is the loss? Or is it that cargo cult notion that 'louder music will attract the great silver bird who will shower us with more beautiful young people'. Try it a bit quieter & see what happens. Experiment - That's the only scientific way to deal with it. I've heard just as many hoots & cheers for quiet songs as loud ones. It generally has to do with the dirty word 'quality',not 'volume'.
