From the Where2sing.com forum:

Barri, there is a definite difference between male & female vocals. I'm no sound engineer so can't give precise details but bass is extremely difficult to get across in a live room. The sound diffuses and can even cancel out. That's why hi-fi's put so much effort into bass reflex cabinets etc. Females, tenors, lead guitars & other higher pitched sounds go in a line of sight straight to the wall or whatever's in their path. That's why a piercing soprano will break glasses & deafen while I struggle to be heard on Got Myself a Gun or other low sound. Techies with unlimited budgets would find an answer using EQ, compression etc but I realize a KJ has a portable rig & acoustics as given by venue.
Kev, I'm sure you please your patrons. I never doubted it. The venues I bemoan are those who may please the few they've retained but are oblivious to the ones they've lost. For example, tonight my associates want to go on a meal/karaoke crawl. I mentioned a venue we'd been to before - the response was 'no way'. I like the KJs there, loved the sound, but drunk rowdy patrons ruined our evening & it looks like we'll never go back there. So they lost some singers. Not even the KJ's fault. Same in Hunter. We stopped going because the bouncer monstered my wife (tipping her out of her seat so his chickie could sit there) while I was up singing. I never argue with a bouncer - just wrote a letter to mgt saying we would describe his establishment as a bloodhouse to any business or professional associate or conference goer. Pity for the KJ who had nothing to do with the incident. But I knew if I stuck up for my wife I'd end up in Cessnock gaol so gave only a bit of a tongue lash & left. Hoons are a big problem. At Chats last week we saw the sort of troublemakers who would be plaguing us if it weren't for some genuine bouncers.
So my point is, it's not just about preaching to your own converted. It's also about attracting others. The ones who AREN'T there may be what some venues should think about (assuming the're thinking).
Tonight hope to try another CBD venue. Probably see some of you there.
