re ageism. The bizarre thing which shows the sheer amateurism of music industry people is that sex appeal was never an essential for selling records. Lets take Michael Jackson & Willie Nelson. I buy their records, but I'd chew my arm off to escape if I woke up between those two. And I doubt either of them has much sex appeal for women either. The music industry is a great example of searching for 'the most recent big thing'. Sometimes canny operators like the Idol franchise artificially create 'the next big thing'. My very 1st post on W2S was about this issue - how our tastes are manipulated and how we run like sheep up the Abattoir ramp - whatever Idol tells us is cool suddenly becomes cool. We've even ended up discussing opera thanks to Paul Pott! Have any young critics actually done the maths & worked out that baby boomers didn't grow up with Frank Sinatra? We were rock & roll, glam & punk. Swing was dead as a dodo by our day. I mainly sing it now because its easy, relaxing, & a challenge to sound like Dean Martin or Nat King Cole - not because that's all I can manage. It's really up to us punters to change the culture. At Chats two of the biggest influences in recent times have been the Troubadours and the Crooners. They might only comprise around 10 people in total but their impact has been to vastly upgrade the entertainment value of the evening, aside from being nice folk. We should be looking at our own strengths rather than judging our standards against whatever takes Dicko & Kyle's fancy this week.
