Johnny, Thanks for taking the advice in the spirit it was meant. As I said, I have never heard you and the fact that you are trying songs like the ones you are doing and have such an analytical approach tells me you really care about what you are doing.

I would rate myself as a reasonably good singer. I can knock out a lot of Queen, Led Zep, Gunners, Foreigner and hit the notes right - with a bit of work that is. Songs that push me a bit are things like Eric Martin's wonderful lines in 'To Be With You'. I can sing the entire song note for note as he does but my personal challenge is to maintain the sweet chesty tone whilst doing so. I saw him live a few nights ago and he sings as smooth as a jazz saxophone player improvising the night away. On a good night I can hit the notes AND keep the tone, and on a bad night I sound rough even though the notes are right. I practice this one exactly how I described - quietly and smoothly - as that is the best way to work on tone which is something too many people forget about when singing. The best thing I have done for my voice is RECORDED myself. Have a listen back - it can be quite scary at first! I would advise anyone who wants a bit of a reality check and a method of GUARANTEED self improvement to get in the habit of doing this.

TDK unfortunately what you are saying can lead to permanent damange and - in the immediate term - a very sub standard singing voice and tone. The best singers can do their thing WITHOUT straining, without FORCING themselves to be loud and without yelling the notes. I see a lot of guys and girls YELLING the notes in an attempt to force the notes through and that DOES work to an extent but it sounds terrible and can be damaging. And it certainly is not singing. As far as Chris Cornell goes he is the PERFECT example as he has totally rooted his voice. He cant sing anywhere near like he could in the 90s. Why? Ultimately it is due to imperfect technique. If you watch him up close in the 90s he would really TENSE UP when singing. Not good. And not good for his voice. It has suffered badly as a result even though he is still better than 95% of male singers on the rock scene (popular I mean, there are less known guys that would eat him alive).

What I am talking about is the reason that guys like Ronnie James Dio who must be in his 60s now can still tour with Sabbath and sing the same songs he recorded 25 years ago and still get away with it. His technique is flawless and has enabled him to sing beautifully over a career that began in the early 70s. Sure, he doesnt sound quite as good as in the late 70s but for gods sake, the guy is 60. Compare the longievity of his voice to Cornell. Technique... is good. Same with David Bowie... He just gets BETTER with age.
