harpoet...
I too am confused. Do pianolas supply words? I know they have all the dots for the piano to play but besides that.....?
I have heard of hidden compartments to keep messages in some music boxes so if someone was inclined, I'm sure lyrics could have been provided. Hehehe.

Man. I like you more and more! I used to hate The Wiggles but when my little brothers came along and became fans of theirs, my appreciation sky rocketed and I really like the song writing skills those guys have.
I've just been listening to stuff by another musical hero of mine: Jim Steinman - the guy behind Meatloaf and Bonnie Tyler's music amongst others. In the process, I discovered women who made me wish I was an adult male in the 80s: Ellen Foley and Karla Devito. Hubba da hubba da! Where are their equivalents today in the music world I want to know? I reckon Brittany Murphy could be the new Ellen Foley if she wished.
Is there a Jim Steinman collection on karaoke or is it restricted to just the artists like Meatloaf, etc?

Steve...
Thanks man. I knew what you were on about. Even as a boy, I used to experiment with my singing technique and after having my voice ruined through improper formal training between 18 and 20 years old, I HAD to experiment in order to just hold a tune again, so I've created and forgotten more techniques than most singers ever employ in their entire singing history. I know for a fact what you stated works and you seem to know your stuff so no problem understanding.
I too have suggested recording for self critique here. However, I recently discovered one individual who is truly dreadful to listen to who has not only recorded himself but distributes CDs of himself to other karaokers so somehow, he is unaware of just how bad he is despite the recordings. This is not just a particularly harsh judgement btw. I'm talking about one of those unintelligible, out of tune voices where EVERY song they sing sounds the same. Y'know? The kind of person who makes non karaokers cringe at the very mention of 'karaoke.' I feel sorry that the guy has been the victim of practical jokes to make him believe he has the potential of Elvis but I really am at a loss as to how he can hear his recorded voice, still believe that AND feel okay with letting other people listen. If I had his voice or similar as my own, I likely would NEVER sing again.
The westie karaokers of Sydney know who I'm talking about here. I don't mind that he's having fun or even that he's seriously deluded but I am at a complete loss as to his inflated self opinion when faced with the cold hard truth coming through those speakers whenever he listens to his CD and the gall to insult other singers with much better voices behind their backs.
catman, did someone autotune his voice on the CD or something? He gave you a copy, didn't he?
However, Steve, I agree that for the majority of people, recording should work, yes. I would go further as to say that even if you don't like what you hear, remember you can always get better.

Tom...
The easy solution for that copyright issue would be to just record the voice and not the music, surely? I guess it depends on how far you wanted to take the singer in their vocal development since for things like timing or constantly singing in tune but in the wrong key, they would benefit from hearing themselves. You could archive the recordings during 'treatment' and delete / destroy them at a later date once the singer was no longer using the services of the karaoke clinic. Just a thought.
