Loving the linked venues in the interesting comments section, David.

This Payneham Tavern gig in South Australia sounds interesting. Couches AND kid friendly. How cool is that?
It did (at first) make me think how I don't like the idea of kids attending venues where alcohol is distributed but I just realised that when I used to attend another social scene - ten pin bowling nights - with my parents, there was a club room I was allowed into with them (an intimate bar) and I didn't start drinking till I was 19 and I only very rarely drink to the extreme so maybe if kids are exposed to these places in a social setting like karaoke, they won't consider drinking the rite of passage it's made out to be when they are finally of age to partake of alcohol themselves because by then, taverns, bowlo / rsl clubs and bars are just old hat, not some temple of grog to be revered because they were never allowed in as children.
Could kid friendly karaoke be the place to help prevent alcohol abuse in later life for the children who attend? Food for thought, parents?
If we are still on this site in the years to come, I'd like the parents here who take their young children to karaoke currently to remember this post and see if it has merit. Obviously other factors come into play like disciplining and education but it would be interesting to see if children's exposure to alcohol in a social setting like karaoke has any effect on their drinking habits in later life. I know England has undergone a drinking revolution but in my parents generation, the pub was somewhere the whole family would go which I don't think is the case these days.
Don't think I haven't considered that exposure to karaoke might drive children to drink earlier either! LOL. I think they'll find something OTHER than drinking to turn to in that case because doing something their parents do - like drink alcohol at karaoke - just wouldn't be cool now, would it? LOL. (Seriously, I don't think we have anything to fear there because kids are way more tolerant of annoying voices than adults are - just look to Star Wars with Jabba the Hutt's little pet with the big ears and screechy laugh or Jar Jar Binks from the new trilogy!)
