Good Point Johnny and very topical with my current new project the 'Family Fun' event!
I do believe drinking alcohol is an educational issue and as parents we are the nearest example our children will have besides school and we all know how kids react to school initially , I am by far the most unperfect parent regarding alcohol education for my kids (that education came for me much later in life) however you are correct re UK where in my time when you turned 18 yrs it was your Dad that took you to the local for what was supposed to be your first pint!
All that aside, a promotional ploy for selling pool tables some years ago was'The Family That Plays Together Stays Together' and believe me this slogan sold a lot of pool tables and a lot of bars and a lot of extensions to a lot of Aussie homes with of course a reasonable bank debt so in the realty of the slogan did the family stay together? And was this responsible advertising?(tic)
My belief is we who sell, promote or work in venues that serve alcoholic beverages have a duty of care to the families that patronise our businesses and likewise the parents who bring their kids have a duty towards them, we are fortunate in our country today where the laws of the land hold us responsible, making it illegal to serve those who are intoxicated and of course making the environment smoke free adds to a healthier more pleasant environment.
Karaoke is not unlike pool in promotion and its association with drinking alcohol, it attracts all ages and whether you sing or enjoy the experience of listening there is no better entertainment than when a child enters the stage and belts out a tune, we have all seen and sometimes 'resented' the crowds appreciation and witnessed the pride of the parents!
This 'Kid Friendly Karaoke' has outstanding potential but must contain 'safe practice' procedures to maintain just that a mutually safe environment for all to work and play in with all parties implementing and adhering to the rules and regulations already set and abiding by curfews or early starts and finishes!
