From the Where2sing.com forum:

I wonder why we need all these prize gimmicks. Many places have a gross surplus of singers already and I can't see that the gimmick attracts more listeners & food/drink buyers. I can see that children's karaoke is a different matter. In fact prizes & clown suits might make it more like a party than a too-precocious intro to the catfighting late teen wannabee pop music world. If advertised truthfully, adults would know to give the kids' session a wide berth & hang out with their peers at more appropriate karaoke sessions.

Ironically, there is such a youth cult in operation these days. This was brought home when I listened to some old family tapes. When I was a pre-teen, it was our parents who had the song nights and we learned from them. They knew some 100 years of famous songs and did them well, with harmonies. By the time I was a teen I had my own recordings and rock band but still deferred to my parents at their parties and sang the old songs along with them. There was no expectation that they should know the latest pop songs and certainly the idea of us teens as 'young talents' did not exist. Indeed, I knew a lady who rode the same bus as the Zombies' lead singer. When their record went to World #1 she wanted to see if he still kept the day job. Sure enough, he was back on Monday morning in his suit as usual. Is there a lesson here for our skill shortages?
