From the Where2sing.com forum:

Yeah Tom, see your point, had the same induction and education from my folks (some 100yrs of famous songs) however lets not be too severe on todays youth, as I have had them do justice and pay great tribute to Frank/Bobby Darin/ Elvis/Buddy Holly/ Beatle s/Stones, Englebert and Tom Jones etc and Time does march on when you recognise some of these songs are up to 60yrs old and some of these singers did revivals of much much older songs that are wrongfully attributed to them today, so these same kids must be receiving the same induction at home too, wouldn't you agree?

My expectations towards my parents knowledge or appreciation of the latest 60's Pop was measured by their criticism of the performers appearance (and mine) and the constant demoralising critique of the lack of talent (no wonder they refered to the period as a Revolution) of the groups and singers, however Englebert was given a different profile, I wonder why?

Regardless of this initial condemnation it is amusing to reflect by the time we entered into the 70's, to my embarrassment my Father donned Elvis style sideburns and 'Al Grassby' suits and him and Mother would further embarrass me with their efforts to do the 'Monkey' and 'Swim' at the local pub to Stones and Beatle music he he!

Your reference to young talent or kids aspiring to 'Pop Glory' back then was not an option and the need to have a decent trade was paramount and not to be squandered on piped dreams, so if we look at the successful ones, they came from exposure to academic pursuits within the arts and while pursuing their passions for Blues, Rock'n'Roll as part time cover bands eventually changed the face of popular music worldwide!

Tom, the successful ones did not go back they went forward, I can recall back in UK and here between '62 and '69 I rode on a bus, train and shared cabs with a few very successful performers that had the same old day job I had, however when the breaks came I didn't see much more of them until I had to pay for the opportunity!

The opportunities in the 60's revolution to succeed in Rock'n'Roll was available, we of that era dreamed of it as do the kids of today and we older statespeople should be available to encourage all youth to seek their dreams, I missed my opportunities only due to the fears and ignorance within my family hierarchy, not their fault ,only the circumstances of the day.

So in Karaoke lets not forget the prizes, clown suits and gimmicks are doing something parents sometimes cannot do and that is giving people the opportunity to lose inhibitions and for a small time in their life display a 'self' not always seen at home!
