From the Where2sing.com forum:

Good post, Billie Tea. I would never discourage young talent, other than when some idol aspirants threaten suicide because someone has poured cold water on their 'dream'. Chris Lilley did a great send up on Aus of the Yr, with the young CSIRO genius who wanted to follow a dream as a singer. I am mostly reacting to the overwhelming age discrimination going on in our culture at present. We see it in every aspect of working life. I think it's a symptom of 'real' jobs (ie essential to economy or life support) dwindling away and everyone being encouraged to follow their dream into crazy jobs. Many of the jobs Marg & I have had make The Office seem like a down to earth productive place. So often its assumed that because someone is young they must be a computer genius, if they're an 'older woman' they must enjoy taking minutes at meetings etc. I've seen this carried to ridiculous lengths with Julia Ross temps with no qualifications, talent, experience, or management training being put in charge of PhDs. Nor is it a question of competence. They often end up on page 1 of the Tele with some scandal & look around for oldies to scapegoat. To then put up with this crap in the evening at a karaoke is well past my tolerance level -ie- whatever Tom sings is, by definition, an oldie. In fact, karaoke is one place I like to see them in action - I have the option to clap & don't have to call them 'boss' or 'your honour'.
