Kev, thanks for the comprehensive, thoughtful answer.

Johhny B, you've hit the nail on the head with ' deprived of great songs when falsetto and rap dominate'. Age is not the issue, either of song or singer. Neither is sex, when we have pitch shift available. What is a problem is suitability to karaoke. I struggle finding 'new' stuff because a lot of it just isn't songs for singers. Some are more instrumental or rhythm tracks - there's nothing to sing! Even famous older songs turn out to be unsuitable. For example, 'I was made for lovin you' by Kiss ought to be a winner but the hook just drones on & on. When I get bored hearing myself singing something, it is not really a karaoke tune. So one reason for seeking out ancient songs is that they were written for singers. Just listen to a great Irish singer belt out a tune a capella in a pub, bringing everyone to tears. It's the combo of tune & singer. On the other hand, some stuff that appeals on radio just dies on the karaoke stage. No singer can bring it to life. I won't do a cold play and yellow a song as an example, but there are some that I've heard that have sounded at best boring from everyone who has attempted them. Maybe they should realize that just because it's recent and they like to listen to it, it doesn't logically follow that they can sing it or that anyone will enjoy their rendition when there are 9,999 other songs that might have been a better choice.
