Thanks Tom.
I can't take credit for the point though as that was raised by GregW. I was merely expounding.
Barri Tone is right to a certain extent I suppose in that a song can be made great with its delivery but I believe there are many songs which no matter how you adapt them vocally, will never be great. Mr Bombastic by Shaggy or Roses by OutKast for example. However, I know there are some who would love those songs. As James.T.Orr says 'horses for courses.'
Personally, I think it boils down to how a song makes a person feel. Sometimes, what moves you and me musically will leave some others cold and sometimes, what moves others will leave us cold. If a truly pathetic song happens to have been attached to a memory of a happy or sentimental occasion, it will be elevated to greatness in the mind of the listener. If a piece of musical genius happens to remind someone of a terrible time, they will consider that song horrible and any other song that reminds them of that song and by default the awful memory, will likely suffer the same fate, thus wiping an entire genre from their list of musical tastes.
So, greatness of a song is definitely in the emotional state of the beholder.
Interesting song choice last night with Chatanooga Choo Choo. That was the first time I'd heard you sing Jazz. I liked it.

Steve...
Thanks again man for the reminder on high note technique which inspired my latest focal point when singing. I can't really call it a method or a technique as it is just a concept I keep in mind as a foundation everything else hinges on. I sang Chris Cornell's 'You Know My Name' last night and while there was definitely a few notes not quite on the money there, it was received well and definitely the best I've done the song to date by far, even SINGING the final high notes as opposed to screaming / strangling them. I only sang through it once unaccompanied at home as a practice run before attendance, so I know I will be able to improve on it easily if I dedicate some time to practising that number in particular. Also made my 2nd attempt at Lips Of An Angel by Hinder and that was received even better still despite only practising it twice at home in advance. The softer notes up so high for both numbers seem to be my sticking point which I shall work on. After all, since I can do Crying In The Chapel by Elvis justice, I should be able to throw some nice, soft notes in in those other 2 songs with a bit of practise. Aware of that, it irks me when on stage and failing to hit a note nicely. The observant can tell from my grimaces, I am sure. LOL
I saw Gaz the KJ do that too with his brilliant rendition of a classic song. I mean, I could see he didn't like the way he hit some of the notes but to my ear, it sounded - as I just said - BRILLIANT! I wish I could believe I was just being picky with my own voice as I feel he was with his but I can't. The notes I hit which were crap in my opinion WERE crap and that's all there is to it, no matter what anyone else says! LOL I'm sure every singer can relate to that feeling. Hehehe.
