From the Where2sing.com forum:

I have never heard anyone do much with Yellow by Cold Play. Some people who like the song & have tried to sing it have done so badly that it took us half the song to figure out what it was. The backing track is nothing but a distortion box on a guitar playing very few chords. So if the singer doesn't do something with the song it is a dud - worse, a noisy dud that so dominates the sound spectrum that you can't even talk at the table while that rubbish is droning on. (Indeed, we had some W2S posters attend on Friday & we struggled to make simple conversation like 'do you live nearby' without sign language - and this is one of the better acoustic venues)

The original recording of Yellow has a certain appeal due to its distinctive vocalist, Chris Martin. Contrast Yellow with Chatanooga Choo Choo, which has lots of different instruments and variations in the track. It would sound good even if the singer fell asleep. Because it's syncopated you can talk while it plays. I always thought it was a cornball but charming song. It's ideal for karaoke as the singer doesn't have to be Caruso to get a decent sound. A week ago we had a guy do an old Bobby Darin number, a 50s swing version of Clementine. It doesn't get much older or cornier. I liked the Darin number even less than the original from 1884. But the guy who sang it did such a great job I thought he was the hit of the night. So, again my point is that not everything that is a winner on radio is suitable for karaoke & vice-versa. I just having my tastes governed by the thought police from the Idol franchise.
