From the Where2sing.com forum:

We need to clarify Boiling Point's issues. If what they mean is that the KJ's mates are there clogging the queue while leaving others sitting there then that's bad rotation. We have certainly seen that in Hunter Valley to the point we stopped going. They focus so much on dragging their mates up that they forget we've even put our names in. Do they think we want to spend money to hear their non-singing mates get up & belch into the mic? Well, we don't any more. There's plenty better to do in the Hunter. But if the boiling point is just about a KJ building a circle of friends, who cares? That seems only common sense. The only risk is that you'll end up with a group of regulars who sing abominably and compensate by not buying food or drink. But even non-paying bums (pun intended) on seats never seems to harm trade.

Rights to a song are a red herring. The main thing is courtesy to not upstage other singers. If you know some poor soul struggles in with a limited repertoire it seems churlish to steal their thunder. But between enthusiasts, it can be fun watching people do different angles on the same song. There are a few people who share common tastes with me & we trade songs all the time. I often see someone doing a song next week that I did the week before. Sometimes it's just reminded us to dust off an old forgotten gem. You never know what will go down well until you try it live. I found a James Bond karaoke CD going for $2 and tried Goldfinger. It was just right. Would my mum have guessed I'd grow up to do Shirley Bassey? Maybe She Hates Me by Puddle of Mud would suit me. Who knows until you try?
