Do we really want to go back to the 'old days' of pub rock, and chain smoking and all the other things that went with it? In most clubs I've belonged to across Sydney & Hunter no form of casual entertainment (ie- no-names groups, trivia, karaoke as distinct from advertised names) brings in a lot of trade over the ambient level there for pokies & badge draws. Just watch the room clear after the badge draw at the Wed session of W2S's #1 ranked venue. But it's the same everywhere. I well recall Balmain Leagues. Whatever entertainment they tried never pulled as many people as just the no-entertainment placebo control group.
Let's not forget that there is an undercurrent of violence seeking outlet every weekend. Note today's Herald: 'Sydney's anger streak has reached critical levels following another weekend of alcohol-fuelled brawls with a bar trashed and drunks battling it out across a city block. The rising violence comes as hospital emergency departments report being inundated with as many injured patients as they would in December, considered the peak fighting season.'
So I support civilised karaoke as a resource for peace. OK, so I carried it too far singing Moonlight in Vermont. I admit, I ain't no Sarah Vaughn and it was too slow. But you never know until you try.
