ceepat...
Oh I've met a few people who like to degrade other singers. All have an inflated ego as far as their own talent goes (and probably in other areas too). One such fellow is a young guy who goes by the name of Danny-oke these days. He recently told me I should give up singing and stick with magic. He also tried to mess up my illusions too. All he managed to mess up was the opinion of him held by those present by being such an arrogant and bothersome jerk. He has a pleasant if unimpressive voice. Like others, he has certainly improved over the years. I first bumped into him at Garry & Di's former gig at Hurstville - actually it was Rusty who hosted that one with Di. The artist formerly known as Danny was just as full of himself and just as quick to discourage others back then but didn't have the talent to back it up from what I observed.
I find it such a shame when people have such a nasty streak inside them. It is difficult to tell whether they are meaning to be mean with their derogatory comments or are just oblivious, uncaring or believe they are somehow doing someone a favour by being insulting. In any case, I think it just goes to show how unimaginative they are to not know about a little something called 'potential' and are incredibly arrogant to believe they are somehow better than everyone else and always will be. I don't begrudge them their self respect but there is no excuse for not having respect for others till given good reason not to. I think that's the difference between a confident person and an arrogant one.
It could be that, driven by fear of competition, they are advocates of tall poppy syndrome and believe the only way to deal with it is to belittle others before they are found out for the mediocre performers they, themselves, are.
I take solace from the arrogance or fear of some and for those who are simply deluded, I just feel pity. It's a good way to not lose one's focus on perpetual improvement as a singer.
