Regarding The recent W2s Newsletter.
David,

What you refer to as Midi Backing track ... is classed as a Sequenced Band.. It is usually Only Drums, Bass and Keyboards/Sax tracks are used and the lead guitarist takes that part and plays live.

The reason I write this is that, I, myself, play in such a band/act… and I have heard the same thing saidon quite a regular basis.

I have put this to the test… as I create such sequences from midi files… I put a collection of “ sequenced” backings along with Professional Studio quality backing track using the exact same instrument(s) ( but done with real Musicians ). And sent it to a professional Studio, requesting if they could tell the difference between the two.

Bearing in Mind I use very high tech Sound Canvas’s to create these tracks ( sound Canvas’s are what you use to select the appropriate sound via Midi )

Of the 6 tracks I put on this disk, 2 were Pro Band Tracks and 4 were Midi Sequenced.

They sent me a letter back and said that 5 of these were pro tracks… and only 1 was midi based. ( Yes they did select ONE of the FOUR midi tracks on this disk for what it was)

So I find that your statement …..” but MIDI files certainly don't do it justice.” ….to be very broad, and obviously the band ( or Bands as the case may be ) are using very low quality Midi sequencing gear.

I only say this, because I am part of that industry ( no offense was taken … just to clarify ) therefore I felt I needed to comment.
