From the Where2sing.com forum:

Hiya catman...
Yeah. Some people deserve a right good smack to the head for their bigoted ignorance. I'm glad you didn't just sit and put up with that nonsense you described but actually gave them an ear bashing (of the verbal kind).
The magic gig that I was offered but turned down was at Cockle Bay.

Ellie and Mallee Boy.
I agree with both of you.

Believer...
It was not I who implied that age is the factor. I merely responded to the following quoted post from the Ask David forum: -
'- you must remember that for many people the internet is not a tool they know all that much about, particularly for those post 35 years old who didnt have the learning of it at school like they do now.'
It was this apparent opinion of age being the factor I addressed. If it was your own post, then, obviously, I took it literally whereas you either didn't exactly say what you meant or just intended the piece be read between the lines. The problem I find with reading between the lines is, all you see is empty space which in itself is open to infinite interpretation.
I find it interesting that you decided to state as fact what is nothing more than your opinion, when you said,
'This is where sometimes people get annoyed with you because you give your own belief rather than look at it from another viewpoint.'
Really? Took a survey, did you? If you are going to express an opinion, at least have the decency to precede it with something along the lines of, 'I think' or 'IMHO.' Fair?
Interesting too that you give credence to old wives' tales about old dogs and new tricks ('old' = 'description of age,' incidentally) and that idealism obviously irks you to the point that you must discourage others from demonstrating it because you are so convinced only a pessimistic outcome is likely - or what you consider 'realistic.' Could it be you are merely projecting your resentment of your own shortcomings and half empty glasses onto me here? It seems you are a victim of your own conditioning but somehow remain blissfully unaware of it.
If people actually tried to follow through with idealistic views rather than discouraging others for theirs, this world could be a much better place for all of us. (I do see the irony of that statement btw, so, no need to point it out. Ta all the same). Karaoke is a great example of this. Despite the many different styles and tastes of karaokers, the ideal of 'community' is manifested! So much so, that here we are on a forum discussing things because of it.
I wonder, Believer, do you see the irony and hypocrisy of implying that I think myself an expert and am closed off to others' opinions while there you are arguing directly with Mallee Boy who tells you straight out from his own real world experience that your academic opinion of internet in the country and the age / conditioning of its users is wrong?
Are you actually considering the meaning of what I am saying or are you again simply thinking I am picking apart your words out of pettiness?
I may be opinionated but I am open to the possibility of being wrong and certainly willing to acknowledge and accept a different viewpoint so long as it stands up better to logical argument than my own. Are you? Truly? :-/
For the record, I don't consider myself an expert in anything other than myself. However, that doesn't mean my knowledge of other subjects is completely without merit or authority. There is such a thing as degrees, you know? Ice and steam - same chemical make up; different extremes measured by degrees, with plenty of other states in between. I'd rate myself knowledge-wise somewhere around the luke warm water mark on many subjects, Antarctic ice on others and perhaps boiling water on others. Lots of subjects interest me and I have experience in different areas also as well as knowing many people with different experiences to share with me, so small wonder I should be able to talk about a lot of stuff. Why do you consider knowledge to be such a bad thing that you have to use a positive word like 'expert' in a negative fashion TWICE in the one post? Could it be you are angry at yourself for not knowing as much as you would like to and are content to remain so rather than broadening your horizons? It would certainly explain why Mallee Boy and myself bore the brunt of your disdain for nothing more than sharing our real world experiences and why you said the following, 'for many once formal education is completed, new things worry them and they stick to the way they have done things before.' Personal experience perhaps? My observation of people's language tells me that the phrases 'MOST/MANY [people] / I think anyone / We all,' is usually their expression of their own opinion based on their own belief that they are the same as 'everyone else' rather than actually based on a truth, so it stands to reason that again you could be projecting. Just an observation. Do with it what you will.
You can disagree with me on any point I make but if you are going to put forward a difference of opinion, at least back it up with some substance rather than sweeping generalisations and loaded commentary, will you? (Misunderstandings of context or wording are, of course, forgiveable).
Purely out of genuine interest (not malice), I'm no psychologist but I would wager you have had either Catholic or strict Christian influences given how at odds you appear to be with yourself (air of confidence but words littered with defeatism) and your disdain for those with knowledge (those who took the 'broad' and not the 'narrow path'), so, if it had been a wager, would I have won or lost the bet? Again, this was just out of interest. Like I said, I have many interests. Not meaning to be rude or inappropriately personal, just trying to see what my profiling skills are like when it comes to this limited sample of online forum discourse.

GregW...
I'll argue with anyone I disagree with. 'Psychologist,' to me, is merely a label used to differentiate one person from another and nothing more. The fact remains they are still a person and since no one person is infallible, no one should be above being put to the test for their opinions - and that goes for me too. Politeness and common courtesy is all very good but it should not dissuade anyone from voicing a difference of opinion. Sometimes the boat should be rocked.
