Strike Bowling Bar, Sydney
Booze, bowling and karaoke should win Strike a 10/10 but it doesn't quite live up to its promise.

Strike Bowling Bar might be by the water at King Street Wharf but its pleasures are far removed from its harbour setting and views of the sun sinking behind the flashing neon of Star City casino.

Feeling like Wilma and Fred from The Flintstones, my bowling babe Kristie and I traipse down a long corridor, past an unmanned bar and empty padded booths, eventually finding a counter staffed by an emo kid badly in need of a haircut.

Half the lanes are empty but, without a booking, he can only offer us one game (at $16 each after 4pm from Sunday to Thursday).

It sounds pricey for a bogan game but at least our velcro bowling shoes don't smell as if a ferret has curled up and died in each toe.

Massive screens featuring lip-syncing, gyrating music video chicks compete with lairy fluoro lighting and loud music to distract the staff - which might explain the patchy service.

Our first attempt at ordering drinks is foiled by a barmaid who sends us to the unmanned bar. After we ask if we should pour our own, a waitress finally takes our order and we start our game by each scoring a strike. Sadly, the camera mounted above the lane to photograph us in all our sporting glory doesn't appear to be working. It's all downhill from there. Our deliveries hug the gutters like clubbers after a night on the tiles, which is a bit sad considering we're still sober.

However, Kristie and I complete our seventh frame before an apologetic waitress arrives with our cocktails - a choc-mint strike ($16) with creme de menthe, vanilla vodka and creme de cacao, and my hot pins cooler ($14), which has lychee liqueur and Chambord. Despite their ludicrous names, both taste delicious - or perhaps we're just parched from waiting so long.

Kristie knocks down just one pin in her next frame so we quickly order more drinks to get our aim back. Our roast lamb pizza ($17) finally arrives, with its promised topping of roasted pine nuts and pumpkin, spinach and baby baa-baa. It's a bit of a spongy mess, like when you zap a frozen pizza in the microwave to cure the midnight munchies. Harsh? Maybe. But I've got to blame something for my pathetic loss to Kristie - 89 to 83.

Booze, bowling and karaoke should win Strike Bowling Bar a 10/10 but it doesn't quite live up to its promise.
