Karaoke gets internet cred
December 13, 2007 - Sydney Morning Herald

SingStar takes aspiring rockers from the living room to the world stage, writes Jason Hill.

There are already more than 1 million SingStar compilation discs in Australian homes but wannabe Australian idols can now choose their own songs to croon.

SingStar was released for the PlayStation 3 console last week, and its key advance is the iTunes-style 'SingStore' that allows users to purchase additional tracks (with their accompanying music videos) to sing using the crowd-pleasing karaoke game.

The SingStar disc features 30 pop tracks from artists such as Britney Spears, Coldplay, U2, Radiohead, The Killers, Wolfmother and REM, but already more than 40 additional songs are available online to download for $2.45 each. Sony will add more music each month.

Game director Paulina Bozek says SingStar's music selection will expand rapidly and offer a diverse range. 'The plan is to offer a wide variety of genres, eras, popular songs and little-known gems. There isn't really a limitation to how many tracks we can offer,' she says.

SingStar also lets PS3 users upload photos, video and audio files from their raucous parties for others to view and rate.

'It's a bit like YouTube meets MySpace meets iTunes,' Ms Bozek says. 'The reason why we did it is because on Monday mornings we had people saying, 'I had a SingStar party on the weekend, check out my photos or my funny videos'.

'My SingStar Online is all about browsing, uploading, rating and this will all be integrated with the website so it is accessible for everybody. You can imagine how the community will develop like YouTube and MySpace, but all around SingStar performances.'

Ms Bozek says SingStar has been popular because it is social, competitive and features music and videos from the genuine artists.

'Plus you can't beat seeing your friends sing their heart out on some rock ballad or nostalgic tune. It has really proven to be universal fun for young and old - it doesn't matter if you are a great singer or not so good, everybody has fun,' she says.

SingStar for PS3 costs $59.95 or $109.95 for a bundle with two microphones.
