From the Where2sing.com forum:

As for the cricket, there has been a crackdown on racial slurs in sport for a number of years now. Though monkey may not be a term that you are worried by, if you watched the recent tour to India, the Indians as a crowd picked up on Andrew Symonda being the only black player in our team and taunted him at every opportunity with obvious racial slurs. It was picked up on tv and those in the crowd caught were dismissed from the ground. Before this tour, it was made clear by the ICC that this sort of behaviour was not allowed by players or fans. In the heat of the sporting field, emotions overcome some more than others. Harbajan had a history of such abuse and that is why it became an issue. If it is word against word then no penalty shouold be forthcoming but the aussie cricketers seemingly had no reason to bring it up unless it was said. Altho Ricky Ponting may not be the most revered person, Adam Gilchrist is one that is held in high esteem for honesty, walking on many occasions if he thinks he is out. So for him to say he heard it then it holds more salt as far as many are concerned. And if it was said, I agree that it would have been said as a racial slur given the media attention from the recent tour and the player's being informed before this tour.
The Indians cannot ave a major go at teh unpires as this is against the spirit and laws of cricket. They can however, have a go at the aussies. The Indians have major pride and billions of dollars rolled up in cricket so a 2-0 loss can be seen as catastrophic. To give off the heat to another issue is a way of preserving esteem in your abilities. Successful people are more likely to do this: when things are good they are in control so esteem improves; when things go wrong, they are not in control so esteem is not decreased
