From the Where2sing.com forum:

Roz, Shazzy - Let me add to this topic by firstly asking the same question about the recent Idol finalists. Emily had no vocal training at all previous to Idol. Kate, we know, has/had extensive vocal tuitition with Venetta Fields. Could you tell of the two who had been trained and who had not? I don't really think you could. So at a karaoke competition it may be other polished areas you will be looking for. Patter, dress, etc.

I know the last comp I entered there were singers who have had extensive vocal training and singers who are well known for their professional comp chasing. Then there were singers who have had no training, have been to a few comps and are just natural singers who 1) can sing 2) love to sing 3)go to karaoke on a regular basis.

Two of the three winners on the night came from the latter category. One came from the professional, comp chasing, extensive training category. So there is still tales of 'natural talent' getting a look-in.

Could you imagine the paperwork and verification that would have to go on to register only the right type of singer for a particular competition? What a nightmare.

Roz, If Jessica is the girl I am thinking of she is just 18 or so but has had extensive training in a youth programme known as T.A.P. , plus numerous combined school activities not to mention going to a school well known for its involvement in the Arts. So she is only fresh to karaoke but not fresh to performing. She is kind of a cross over. It will happen everywhere you go and whenever there is a competition. We have no control over it. Wintersun have some rules in place but I think that is about it. We will just continue to sing and smile.
