From the Where2sing.com forum:

Julz, Shazzy, I had never met Jessica until this contest, but she is in either her late teens or early twenties, a few people have told me that she sings with a country band, but whether that is true or not, I don't know. She did have a good, natural voice. It is hard to tell when some people are professionals and some just have that raw natural talent. I am thinking seriously of putting my name down on the Judge's Bench and going in for judging some of these contests. Having been around karaoke since 1998 and with working in the industry as a Panel Operator for several companies, I think I have a good idea of what to look for. I would judge on song knowledge, presentation of the song, appearance and how the crowd reacts to that act. It is something that I am thinking about.

I really do think that karaoke contests should be left to the amateurs, after all the professionals make their money elsewhere from gigs and singing with bands and the like, we go to karaoke to have fun, meet our friends and just enjoy ourselves. I have noticed that with this particular contest (this was the third year that it had run) that it starts off with a mixture of amateurs and professionals coming in for the heats, the amateurs stick around and come back and practice their songs, while no one sees the professionals again till it is time for their semi-final and then if they make it to the grand final.

I knew from the time that I entered the contest (which was really only to make up the numbers on the night) that I would not get further than the semi-finals, but I entered it to gain experience (which the head judge told me I had gained and that my voice had improved significantly since last year's contest). I knew I was up against some of the best around, but I took on the challenge.

O.K. Onto another subject that is also part and parcel of contests. What are the best songs to sing? Is it better to sing slow songs, fast songs, or a mixture of both? From personal experience, I have found that singing one of each seems to go down well, but not always. Is a person who sings rock 'n' roll and gets the audience involved a better singer and performer than the singer who sings ballads and just stands on stage and doesn't involve the audience? Let's toss that one around and see what people say.
