Interesting comments being made in recent posts. I must start off by saying that I dislike karaoke comps per se - I believe that karaoke is a participative 'sport', and not a competitive one.
Nevertheless, I think most most karaoke comp judging missed the mark with their judging criteria. To me, I believe that each comp has its own primary objective/s, and hence must have very distinct and different juding criteria.
My thoughts:
(a) Singing Comp / Talent Quest : To be judged 90% (or whatever very high percentage) on technical aspects of singing and delivery, 10% on entertainment value.
(b) Australian Idol : To be judged on mass cross-section market appeal (looks, personality, some vocal ability), record selling potential, a live-concert performer to boot : in short, the wiiner is a potential money-making machine for all involved!
(c) Karaoke Comp : To be judged 70% (or whatever greater than 50 percentage points) on pure joy, entertainment, crowd-pleasing atributes, and the remainder on singing / delivery aspects : in short, the winner should be someone who can hold the attention of and entertain a rather mixed boisterous / loud / drinking / eating / chatting 'mob'.
In line with my thoughts, if people must have enter comps, I think song choice should follow what the judges are potentially looking for, and pick accordingly.
As for restricting entrants, I would say - throw it open to all-comers - if these so-called 'professionals' want to put their 'reputation' on the line by entering the comps, let them! It will be a promoter's dream if some 'known professionals' have entered (but we have to make it clear to them that we will use their names in all promos for the comps they have entered). And hey, remind them that there can be only the ONE WINNER - so many of the 'professionals' would join the losers' club and have to live with that dent in their resume - imagine how well that would go down when they go for their next gig!! .... ahhh, I didn't get into the Finals of our local pub's karaoke comp, but would you give me this gig anyway?? .. I'm really not that bad, the judges didn't know what they were doing .... !!??!!
