From the Where2sing.com forum:

Sadly, there is no way you can weed out professionals (semi or otherwise) from amateurs in a competition. I would love to have a karaoke comp that was just strictly for amateur karaoke punters only, but that is pretty much impossible. Karaoke is many things and one of them is a starting point for singers, to give them practice and also experience in all the facets of singing live in front of an audience and even giving them a leg up in the music industry. Perhaps we are looking at comps the wrong way. Most are run to get more people in, attact new people to the gig etc and as an end result and along the way, make more money for the venue. But, it is no good having a Competition ... if there is no ... Competition !! A comp raises the bar and sorts out the serious from the not so serious and amongst other things lets us know how we are really going with our singing and gives us something to gauge it on and a chance to work on improving our singing between comps if that is what we want to do. Short of grading singers, like golfers etc ... like a handicap system or creating A Grade, B Grade, C Grade etc I don't know how we could create the so called perfect amateur comp. Sure there are methods to try and shut out comp chasers and make it not worthwhile for pro's, like making them become regulars etc. Personally, I would rather not have comps and just work on building a venue by making it a fun night where all can sing and let their hair down and party hard and enjoy themselves in a clean, safe and soon smoke free environment. I think there are too many comps, there just seems to be more and more and I know they turn some people off and at some venues can work against the objective. IE you can lose patrons as well as attract them. There is a place for competitions, even open ones, but there are too many these days. The whole idea of karaoke, is to enjoy ourselves, to kick back, relax and have FUN !!! Eat, drink, sing and be Merry ... 'tis the season !!
