From the Where2sing.com forum:

WorBlly: certainly an empty room is very difficult to mix for.........as the room fills up things tend to change and the sound is usually better all round.....and of course sometimes we dont always get it right and sometimes we are in fact 'too loud'.....but i am usually told so! LOL....by the same token we are possibly 'too loud' for some peoples tastes..........however the venues we work are predominently under 30`s....and agree with it or not ........thats what they want........and I do agree with TOM regarding the hearing damage issue..........It will always remain an issue just as long as we have amplified music.MP3 players with headsets... and.'boom boom' car stereos.

Interestingly some 12 months ago both my wife and I had our hearing tested.........and being in the over 50`s age bracket I was expecting the worst..........surprisingly our hearing in both cases was well above the norm for our age and thats after 6 years of standing behind a console 2-4 nights per week at often 100+db.

Having a more powerfull system doesnt mean you are actually louder.........but your system has less work to do to achieve acceptable levels.......many do not understand the theory behind 'System gain Structure'.....turn your amps down and get a better clearer and louder sound.....and I would suggest to any new host to Google 'Gain Structure' and read as much as they can and try to get their head around it before doing a gig
