From the Where2sing.com forum:

To understand it, you need to already understand how a database is structured - and it works like this.

- A database is a collection of 'tables' that each holds information - or think of them as separate lists where each item (or line in the list) has a number (1, 2, 3 etc) by which that line, and the information it contains (eg: 1 John Smith Sydney, 2 George Brown Brisbane, 3 etc...) can be uniquely identified; because trying to identify a line by a name such as John Smith might match more than one line.

- In the W2S database, the 'table' (that's called 'W2Sers') has a list of every person's firstname. surname, nickname, rights etc.

- Each line (eg: each person) in that table can be connected to many lines in another table (called 'Email Addresses') that holds email addresses, and thus one person can be connected to as many email addresses as they own (because each line in the 'Email Addresses' table includes the number of the line in the 'W2Sers' table o the person with that email address).

Hoping you're still with me here, that's just to demonstrate how one person can be connected to several email addresses, so it doesn't necessarily give people a new Sign In for each email address that they have. And if you understand that, then you'll understand the next bit which is about how one person gets to have only one vote in the Top 10:

- Each person (in the 'W2Sers' table) can be linked to only one line in the table that lists Top 10 votes (the W2S programming takes care of this). Every time a person makes a new vote, any other lines in that (voting) table connected to them are deactivated - vote as many times and as often as you like, and only your last vote will ever be active (and therefore be counted).

And, after 30 days, all prior dated votes are deactivated so that voting represents only the last 30 days of votes cast.

When you go to the W2S main page, right there and then it does a count of all the active votes so that it can present you with the latest Top 10.

Hope that helps in explaining how and why it works...
