From the Where2sing.com forum:

Malley Boy, I have no commercial reason to promote my local. I try to keep my comments generic, which is why I don't mention my local by name when making general comments. Sure, there are no doubt sensible, non-violent venues around, but my wife will not risk it and, without her, I sure ain't going. As I mentioned, there is enormous variation and you can have a damaging incident even at a sensible venue by passing too close to a speaker at the wrong time etc. I'm criticizing those that seem addicted to the noise as though it were necessary for the music or their trade - which I seriously doubt. I note that the 'waving the little finger' campaign against auto speed seems to be catching on. I'm not sure that waving our pinkies when buffoons get up to blow our eardrums out will be as relevant as many of the worst (singer) offenders are female. It's just a gradual cultural change getting away from the idea that coming home covered in putrid cigarette smoke, ears incessantly ringing, and a whopping hangover means 'I must've had a great night'. Silly me. I thought karaoke was about singing.
