From the Where2sing.com forum:

Isn't it funny how songs from yesteryear could be misconstrued as smutty? Can't even use the word 'gay' in songs any more. That sucks. Take, 'A bachelor, gay am I' or Nat King Cole with, 'Young and gay or old and grey, near to me or afar, promise me this day, that you'll always stay as sweet as you are.'
I remember getting a shock when I got started in musical theatre by playing the role of The Mikado (Gilbert & Sullivan) and found that the 'N'-word was used in the original lyrics of one of that character's songs. That's one lyric I'm glad was changed but then, ghetto speak uses it all the time now. If a BET (a TV channel in the USA catering to the African-American community) production of The Mikado was put on, I wonder if they would use the original lyric and thus not cause offence. :-/
One of my favourite suggestive lyrics comes from Elvis' 'Santa Claus Is Back In Town' a great Rhythm & Blues number: 'Hang up your pretty stocking, turn out the light. Santa Claus is coming down your chimney tonight! Oh! It's Christmas time, pretty baby...'

Here's a question for the hosts and karaoke disc / tracks suppliers: Are there any Tom Lehrer karaoke discs available? He is a Jewish American who was a maths professor who in the early 1960s if not sooner, took to performing humorous songs, accompanying himself on piano, performing live at various venues and also wrote and recorded songs for children's television show, The Electric Company (I think that was its name) which gives Sesame Street a run for its money in terms of educational entertainment with its great music.
I love so many of his songs and he composed for several different genres and would truly love to sing much of it at karaoke.
I thought to ask as, on the topic of suggestive lyrics, he had a song entitled 'Smut' in which feature the lyrics, 'All books can be indecent books though recent books are bolder, for filth, I'm glad to say is in the mind of the beholder; When correctly viewed, everything is lewd. I could tell you things about Peter Pan and The Wizard Of Oz (THERE'S a dirty old man!)'
Of course, that isn't indicative of his entire act. He just wrote the appropriate lyrics for the various songs.
My faves besides Smut are Pollution, The Elements (the periodic table sung to the tune of Gilbert & Sullivan's Modern Major-General - and much FASTER), The Vatican Rag, So Long Mom I'm Off To Drop the Bomb (a song for World War III), National Brotherhood Week and gosh(!), heaps more!
If he ain't on karaoke already, please, please, PLEASE try to rectify this! I'm not the only fan of his stuff. He does have a following.
