From the Where2sing.com forum:

Accents and singing especially on Australia Day is not a bad topic however if we go back in history, with the exception of The Seekers, Rolf Harris and Frank Ifield their has not been many uniquely Aussie sounding artists that have made the international scene and these three funnily enough were hugely accepted in U.K. rather than U.S.
Maybe the international promotion of great Aussie Talent like Slim and John Williamson can only be attractive if it is in the genre of 'Pub with No Beer' or 'Old Man Emu' as it was for Rolf with 'Tie Me Kangaroo Down' and lets not forget only 5% of Yanks actually ever get out and visit other parts of the world (I'm assuming that don't include their armed forces he he) so to 'throw another shrimp on the barbie' or 'Tan me hide when I've Died Clyde' could be the closest education they get of Australia and Aussie's!
This of course is not true and Australia has driven and done the International Music scene a great service with brilliant vocalists and musicians and not unlike U.K. has invaded the U.S. with a variety of unique song and style.
The British Invasion of American international dominance of Pop Music in the 60's was done with stealth and an arrogance of serving up the traditional dish of American Rock'n'Roll without the cream puff look and almost taking it back to it's Negro roots a huge shock and challenge to guys like FBI's Hoover who for a long time thought he had it under control!!! lol
The British bands such as The Beatles,Stones,Herman's, Searchers had their own unique sounds and 'accents' in their performances, that is what made them different over there (U.S.) we only have to listen to a great deal of these groups earlier 'covers' of American songs to detect the difference especially the Beatles, Rockgod.
All that aside performers like Tom Jones and Englebert emerged and challenged the untouchables in Country and Standards Balladeering, Jones in particular was revered over their as the only White/Black vocalist in the world, not unlike a personal favourite Geordie lad Eric Burdon, no better blacker sound could you get, my point, the success of this invasion was by dishing up to the yanks, that there was worldwide recognition and need for a culture of music that was being controlled and Black was Beautiful and of course there was a lot of MONEY to be made and as history has shown they were quick to get on to that!
It also opened up International Barriers allowing artists to be and sound as they needed to be commercially regardless of where they came from, the worldwide acceptance of Blues, Jazz, Folk and Rock'n'Roll was spreading, truly an era of Revolution and we have to thank Great Karaoke Host In The Sky for that, PEACE!
