Malley Boy - Yes the only Nick Cave composition on Karaoke shame ay.... If you saw his induction into the Hall of Fame it was quite amusing how he rhymed off other ex pats that shared the honour with him, all great Aussie Talents that couldnot get recognition of their art here in Australia,it is unfortunate how we brand certain artists as ours when this country's industry turned their back on them initially. I can't help but recall how in the 60's great local talent was ostracised and banished by the powers to be only because they chose not to conform like all the other 'yes men' what a loss was the talent of Ray Brown just one example of a performer victimised and I think to a degree the great Billy Thorpe who eventually gave them all the 'finger'! Two Great Aussie Rockers R.I.P.
Rockgod - No I wasn't refering to that period, only quoting some of my own general knowledge given to me by my son in law in the U.S. some time ago so to save time on the 'nit pick' lol latest news is outgoing U.S. Citizens up to Sept.2007 23,739,220 excl Mexico factor in the last quarter on average we may be looking @ 8% of population however this does not descriminate types of traveller but all outgoing travellers (U.S. International Air Travel Stats) phew!!!
My main point in the post Michael was, as we both agree is how insulated, isolated and controlled the U.S. music industry was from the rest of the world, I mean groups such as the Beatles,Stones etc etc were not introduced to the great works of Willie Dixon by buying his album @ the local record shop in downtown Liverpool or London they discovered all these great performers through Bootleg records smuggled into U.K. from the States.
A short time ago on ABC they had a series on the Blues I only caught a few of them as we gigged on the night, I am not sure if it is available through ABC Shops however it was fascinating to see how US control of music was circumvented when White British Artists recorded Negro composers music and sold it back to the Yanks as Hits this was surely the beginning of American recognition of Negro Genius and opened the doors to so much talent and musical freedom as we know it today!
