From the Where2sing.com forum:

David, in response to your 'I'm puzzled'. The problem of 'same old, same old' is with those singers who don't improve. There are, sadly, some with no learning curve who sound no different on their 200th rendition than on their 1st. Most, however, do improve with practice. Then we have some militants who never nail down a song but just move on to the next dud. Even these usually improve with time. As to singers who boast they can sing anything, it is probably a case of those who can actually do so, like many ex-pro singers who have to acquire that ability, being modest enough to know their limitations. Some songs are logically and physically incompatible - like a banjo trying to play a violin part. I doubt there would be many who can sound like both James Brown and Barbara Streisand. That doesn't mean, however, that they might not be able to do their own decent version of their songs even if they sound different.

I admit to being one of those who avoids singing the same song twice. I don't want to be a bore or be stereotyped, but more importantly it's part of the fun to keep trying new stuff. You never know. For example, last night I did Whitney Houston's I will always love you and it went over better than some songs I knew much better and that were better suited, which goes to show that you need to experiment if you want to find good material.
