From the Where2sing.com forum:

At the end of the day most people are driven by there own egos and once you have been singing for a while I guess as you inprove was practise and lots of people are starting to say you sound great then you start to consider having a go a a comp.
This is not a bad thing as long as you are not driven by money. When you sing on any old night people will tell you that you have a nice voice and will make you feel good about yourself. If you enter a comp people will expect that you have a great voice and will not tell you much at all.It is up to you what you want from the comp..Money or comments...To enter a few comps can make you a better singer by pushing you forward but you also can over sing your song trying to impress the judges.all the rubbish aside about comps they are good for the locals of a pub and club and the pub can benifit from this but if the comp has to high a prize than the chasers will come and they dont drink anyway nor do they come back again till the next comp. There really is no balance to it the same old chasers go to the same old comps and sing the same old songs that they feel are safe ones. You sometimes can count the same people on one hand that try to pretend they would normally be a regular at the venue (who are they kinding) They say things like..Im just here for the fun of it then if they dont win they leave with the shits(what fun is the shits anyway) Lets face it they are there to take the money than run to the next venue to pretend they are regulars there as well yet they live 100 kms away..IM JUST WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO WALK IN THE PUB AT A COMP AND YELL OUT ' IM JUST HERE FOR THE MONEY' Then go to the bar and pour themselves a free water .

Than as normal sit at a table and not talk to any of the other people in the bar as they plan there attact on the same old competiors from the last venue they where at.
