From the Where2sing.com forum:

I totally agree with Fossie Bear if you judge singers by not looking at the screen then don’t use it at all and call it a talent quest.
Marrickville years ago gave away more money than $10000 at one stage it was up to $50,000.
However it was billed as a talent quest and no screens were available in the finals.
If you call it a Karaoke contest then looking at the screen should not be used to take away points.
Karaoke is all about words coming up on a screen that you sing to.
There are many other ways in which to separate singers such as, presentation, crowd response and singing ability its self.
When I ran Karaoke Competitions at Peakhurst Inn it was judged and scored on those 3 areas and with 3 or 4 judges in the Finals (although the choice sometimes was hard) a winner was always found by their scoring.
I also had an Audience award which went to a singer that didn’t place and was awarded purely by the Audience reaction.
This kept everyone happy including the locals who would scream and shout for their local friends
A very good judge of talent that runs one of the biggest talent agencies in NSW once told me that it comes down to song choice, presentation and audience response and even sometimes to his own liking or disliking of the songs sung on the night.
No judge will ever get it totally right in everyone’s opinion, because personal preferences will always vary and there will always be someone that disagrees with their choice, but providing that everyone (contestants and audience alike) are informed on how its to be judged on the night (and the judges stick to that criteria) then a fair result will always be made.
