BillyT: Going into comps was how I discovered what type of songs I was more suited to and what kind of range I had because it was really the only time that I paid much attention to really nailing a song.

I think the main problem with comps isn't necessarily the concept, but the execution. Not enough time and thought is spent coming to an understanding as to what everyone wants to achieve by holding a comp and what kind of entrant rules and scoring criteria best serve to achieve that goal. If you want to up your bar take, obviously you want to reward those who bring lots of people and so an audience vote becomes an option. If you want to increase the 'class' level of your venue and attract great voices then obviously the singing score gets more of a bias and so forth. Too often a comp is bung on, money is thrown around and everyone wonders why so many people hated the experience...
