From the Where2sing.com forum:

That's the trouble with people like Venue Managers who are normally Internet illiterate - ask him to explain an IP address and how it's allocated, and if he has any idea about this it'll be self-evident that counting IP addressses as any kind of measure of website usage is nonsensical.

So, in explanation, an IP address is like a worldwide unique telephone number (as in a telephone number with all the international codes included). An IP address takes the form of such as 123.45.67.89 - and each provider of Internet services (such as Telstra) gets a certain number range (for example, something like 123.45.60.00 to 123.45.89.99) to allocate to those computers connecting to their service. So when you dial up or start your ADSL Internet connection, Telstra checks your username and password, and then connects you to their system and allocates one of their available IP addresses; when you disconnect, you lose that IP address so that it's now available for someone else (that's why your IP address almost always changes each time you log in).

Your computer must get a unique IP address when connected to the Internet, because when your browser connects to W2S, the W2S server (the computer that holds the W2S website files) in the USA must have your IP address so that the information it sends back (that's the page you want to view) can get sent all the way back to your own computer.

So telling your Venue Manager how many IP addresses connect to W2S every day will tell him nothing - in the same way that a list of phone numbers of people calling him will not give him any idea about the profit of his bar. Better to ask him what he really wishes to understand, and then explain it to him.
