From the Where2sing.com forum:

If locals are the judges, then it isnt a competition. It is a favourite person competition. Why even put on a comp then. If you put on a comp, it should be open. Or else give your regulars money for nothing.

If venues want to make a big deal, charge people for entering the karaoke area. BUT they dont do that, so therefore you cant complain that people dont buy drinks. A host has to find the best way of catering for the night so that teh atmosphere of the place is brilliant that it brings people in regardless of whether they buy drinks or not. The more people attracted to the venue, the more likely the venue is to make money. But you can not EXPECT out of some moral judgement that people 'should be prepared to spend something'. Teh venue makes it free to walk in. You don't have to buy a drink ... If you are a host work at making the atmosphere better ... making attracting better singers so people come to watch them (and then spend money on drinks!) I understand karaoke cost money to put on but a venue is doing that to get more people in. That includes people who spend money and those who dont. People who dont spend stil add to the atmosphere and sinpire others to enter there
