Re pros and comps issue...
A professional singer is someone paid to sing. I've encountered many singers at karaoke who may be mistaken for professionals just because they were such good singers / entertainers but they just loved to sing, they didn't get paid for it, so I qualify them as amateurs / enthusiasts. So by that token, Music Addict, a karaoke host is not a professional singer. They aren't paid to sing. They're paid to provide a service for other singers. Just because a KJ may sing to inspire others to get up and sing for themselves does not make them a professional singer.
It is possible to get legal advice from anyone but you are usually encouraged to seek PROFESSIONAL legal advice. The difference?: The pro's not only have put in the time to learn their stuff but they also have it as their job description.
I love great singers but if they are professional singers, they should not compete at amateur level.

Re: drinkers vs non-drinkers...
Since soft drinks are available at the bar, their purchase also contributes to the takings and therefore should be counted as doing so. Lots of non-drinkers match dollar for dollar the sensible drinkers' contributions to the night out with their soft drink purchases and should not be discriminated against for wishing to avoid alcohol for whatever reason.
Let us remember too that most karaoke singers go to actually SING rather than just sit and listen. The cost of 2 soft drinks (including bottled water) per song you sing seems reasonable to me. At some venues, all you get to sing of an evening is 2 songs. I once knew a venue where you'd be lucky to get just 1 song in if you didn't arrive bang on start time.
Is that where the value of dance breaks comes into the picture?: The dancers sweat and thus get thirsty from the dehydration, so they buy more drinks to refresh themselves. If they buy alcoholic drinks then they probably get even more thirsty given alcohol would dehydrate them still further and so the cycle continues. Hmmm...
If you are a standard soft drink drinker with guilt issues over not supporting the karaoke with more money, then how about paying by the middy instead of by the schooner. It works out more expensive that way (doesn't it?) and thus you are contributing more for your night's entertainment. Bottled water is usually expensive, so if you drink that, I think you're doing fine as is.
