From the Where2sing.com forum:

Believer, I'm not sure karaoke is a form of entertainment. It is largely about singing rather than listening. If one wanted to listen to great singers one would go to a concert or hear a professional act. There might be a few who like to watch virgins and clown acts or people make fools of themselves but they would be a minority. Most people at my local, particularly on the quiet night (Wed) just go to take turns singing. We do, of course, listen to each other and in fact spend a lot of our discussion getting ideas for songs, hence learn from each other. After all, the singing is what we have most in common.

I don't think hosts should try to do anything about bad singers. Their role is to be fair and encouraging (except to saboteurs and hoons). Rather, it is up to us as a community of singers to set standards by example and by distributing our praise toward what we want (what psych's call 'shaping behaviour') -ie- if someone gets up and does something unusual and great and we largely ignore them then jump up & down screaming with standing ovations to clowns who know 15% of the lyrics and notes - guess who'll come back week after week? We get what we reward and lose what we punish. And its up to us, not the hosts, if we want change.
