From the Where2sing.com forum:

Yes, alot of what you say is true Tricia, my company has had to take out lots of licenses over the years when doing sound for live concerts. Mainly when playing background music between sets but also to cover gigs where alot of cover versions are going to occur.

Just a few corrections if i may so people don't become confused by accidental misinformation. MIPI i believe is the investigating body of the industry, not the licensing body, that i think is AMCOS for copying one format to another and they offer a reproduction license for DJ's & KJ's. They can however only offer that to music covered under their wing so to speak, and that is on top of the manufactures permission to do so as well. You must have both as i understand it.

If you have both then using a computer system at any venue that is covered by the correct licenses is of course totally legal without any Grey areas you would think.

If i may paste it, here is a link to MIPI website which might interest some http://www.mipi.com.au/documents/KaraokeFlyer2May2007-piracyinyourindustry.pdf

As for your can of worms, i think only an idiot would illegally download music in venue the risk of getting caught would be high and the penalties great, $60,500 or 5 years imprisonment for each track infringed. Could you afford to risk that? And i think for the venue it's around $300,000 for letting it happen. Waiver? Damn right i'd be getting one signed. LOL

Just FYI most manufactures allow downloads straight from their websites now which are totally legal, in fact most recording artists and record companies do this. They have quickly learnt, that the best way to put illegal pirates out of business is to play them at heir own game!! So everyone out there, GO LEGAL stop the piracy, and protect the music industry in this great country.

Hope this is of interest!
